ACCOMMODATION

Please remember that there are no rooms with private facilities, so don’t forget that dressing gown!
Towels are not supplied so please remember to bring enough for the week.

Please do not bring any aerosols with you, they set off the fire alarm!!!!

Accommodation is in student halls set in the grounds of the school and is of a basic standard. Please be aware that as the site is hilly the accommodation and the classroom blocks are some distance apart, it is not ideal for those with mobility difficulties. Please contact Steve Taylor on 01706 875997 to discuss any accessibility issues.

Your room number along with a keycode to access your designated house will be given to you on arrival. Each house is equipped with a common room with tea / coffee making facilities, fridge and microwave. Student houses will have a student warden who will be responsible for fire drill and reporting any problems.

All rooms have single beds. No double beds are available. Rooms have one, two, three, or four single beds.

Payment of the Single Supplement will guarantee you a room to yourself. Anyone not paying the Single Supplement can expect to be allocated a room with other students of the same sex.

SINGLE ROOMS

These are allocated on a first come first served basis.

FOOD

All meals are served in the light and airy Refectory.
There will be a light lunch and the main meal will be served in the evening.
If you have any special dietary requirements you have not indicated on your application form then please let us know as soon as possible.
On arrival you will be issued with a name badge. Please look after it. You will need it to get your meals in the refectory. So, no badge, no meal!

On Saturday 1 August ONLY, the evening meal will be at 17.00

TIME OF ARRIVAL

On arrival please report directly to the M4P Reception which will be clearly signposted. You may park on the car park adjacent to the main school buildings, or in the car park by the new sportshall, or opposite Style House. Please note that this year there will be NO PARKING at the rear of Nowell and Shute Houses.

Check in time is from 3pm on Saturday. At Reception you will be given your envelope containing essential information such as your room number and door codes, a timetable for the rest of the week, and site plan.

Please do not arrive before 3pm as staff will be preparing rooms from the previous holiday week. If you get there before then please take some time to have a look around

HOW TO GET TO GIGGLESWICK SCHOOL Top of Page

BY ROAD:
From the North -
Giggleswick is next to the A65, the main link road between the M6 and Leeds. Approaching from the North, take the B6480 signposted ‘Settle’. Take the right turn signposted Giggleswick School. Continue down the lane until you see the school on your left.
From the South -
From Leeds stay on the A65, and go straight on at the Settle roundabout, After about a mile taking the next turning on the right, signposted Giggleswick. At the crossroads, carry straight over into Raines Road, and on past the all weather pitch. Turn left at the T-junction, start to go up the hill and you will see the main entrance to the school on your right.

BY RAIL:
From the North -
Trains from Edinburgh Waverley approximately every two hours. The school is five minutes by taxi from Settle station.
From the South -
Trains from London Kings Cross to Leeds. Change at Leeds for the train to Settle (every two hours). The school is five minutes by taxi from Settle station.

WELCOME MEETING – SATURDAY 1st August Top of Page

There will be a welcome meeting in the Sports Hall at 6pm. This will be your opportunity to meet the tutors and fellow students.
Tutors will expect you to attend all the sessions of the courses for which you have enrolled.
Exceptions will be made only with the agreement of the appropriate tutors.
If you have queries about the courses for which you have enrolled, or if you have any difficulty over choices of courses occurring at the same time in your timetable, you should discuss them before the school with Steve Taylor, 01706 875997 or with the tutor after the Welcome meeting on Saturday evening.
Some classes will have a get together on the Saturday evening after the welcome meeting.

Thanks to all those who have offered to help on the first day, we will get in touch with you individually before the school.

Thanks to all those who have already volunteered to act as a buddy. You will be contacted individually before summer school.
We still need people to act as buddies to help new students settle in to the school. It can be overwhelming to arrive at an event where there is so much going on so, if you feel you could help someone get to know their way around and introduce them to people on your course, please contact Kevin John (email: kevin@m4p.org.uk , tel: 02920 318298)

House Wardens
We would also like to ask for volunteers to act as house wardens. This entails checking the file we will provide in each common room every morning to see whether anyone has reported a domestic problem (eg. No toilet paper, a leaking sink etc) and, if so, informing a member of the committee at breakfast so that they can ensure it gets sorted out. We would also ask house wardens to collect a jug of milk from the Refectory for “their” kitchen after breakfast so that people can make their own tea and coffee. If you are willing to take this on, please contact us at admin@m4p.org.uk to volunteer or inform any of the committee on the day of arrival when you sign in.

There are two student concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in the Concert Hall.
These are for individual performers and small groups. The more varied items the better –solo singers, duettists, poetry readers, and small ensembles. If you would like to take part in any of these please put your name on the list on the school notice board when you arrive. To allow as many students as possible the chance to perform you are asked to initially put your name down for ONE solo performance only during the student concerts.

The bar will be open in the Dutton Centre from 7pm-12 midnight. (1am on Friday evening)

Unfortunately Concerts will not be professionally recorded this year due to lack of CD sales last year. Gerard Presencer with the Shepherd Group Band Saturday 24th Oct 2009 : 7.30pm Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York Gerard Presencer is universally recognized as one of the best trumpet / flugelhorn players in his field. His most celebrated recorded performance, which has lead to his being described as “subliminally, the most famous trumpeter in the world”, is his solo work on the 3 million selling album by US3, “Hand on the Torch” (1993) on Blue Note. It is Gerards' trumpet that is featured so heavily on the big hit of that CD, Cantaloop.

Nicola Long will bring her love and experience in chamber music to Giggleswick.
Tom Atherton will be replacing Chris Evans on all percussion courses.
Neil Waters will be replacing Joe Auckland in the Jazz course.
Simon Pearson will joining as a Jazz percusion specialist.

EXTRA COURSE!!
The mystery of music – or how on earth did that work its magic??
Did you bring up your favourite music to play in the car CD player? Do you wonder how a piece you like is put together – how it works? Would you like to talk about a piece and share views with other musicians? Irrespective of style of music – be it classical, band, Indian Ragas, popular, folk or whatever, Prof Bill will be on hand to chair a session everyday when we can share music and try and unravel its mysteries. We can sort a time mutually convenient to the majority.. (and NOT in breaks or meal times!!) and begin the detective work together! No need to attend more than the session when your piece is chosen for analysis..but you might be intrigued by other musicians’ choices!

Jazz Harmony and Improvisation 1, 2 & 3 Jazz Advanced, Jazz Piano, Jazz rhythm section and drums workout - Paul Bartholomew and Team
Further specific details on repertoire will be available before the course on the Summer School website www.m4p.org.uk. Singers enrolling for Levels 2/3 will be expected to participate in all tunes studied, and may select another song from the book, but should email the title (with any key changes required) to m4pjazz@f2s.com by July 25th 2009. For the traditionalists amongst you there will also be a chance to work on and perform 2 stomp tunes “King Porter Stomp” and “Black Bottom Stomp”

Big Band (A) - Paul Bartholomew and Team
All suitable instrumentalists (5 Saxes, 4/5 Trombones, 4/5 Trumpets, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano. Percussion) are encouraged to join this ensemble which plays a variety of Big Band Music from arrangers like Neal Hefti, Lennie Niehaus, Duke Ellington and Sammy Nestico to contemporary and World Music styles based on Latin and South African grooves.
The emphasis is on developing good ensemble playing over the week to prepare for a concert of 10-12 pieces on the Thursday Night.
All are welcome to this popular session, but if the Band is heavily over-subscribed, then students with the appropriate level of experience will be directed to Open Jazz Orchestra.

Open Jazz Orchestra (O) - Simon Atkins
Suitable for all-comers and all instrumentalists. By using a carefully chosen repertoire of arrangements of well-known Jazz standards this group concentrates on ensemble playing, getting the right groove, swing feel, phrasing, improvisation, dynamics and all that Jazz! Highly recommended for those in Jazz Harmony/Improvisation 1 or those completely new to an ensemble tackling Jazz repertoire.

Brass Band (B) - Dave Payn, assisted by Simon Dawson Top of Page
Depending on numbers, I wish to concentrate mainly on original band works rather than arrangements this year. Eric Ball’s Resurgam is on my ‘wish list’. Philip Sparke’s Malvern Suite is another. As ever, students are encouraged to plunder from their own bands’ libraries (with permission of the bands, of course!) and bring pieces along for consideration. I would also to continue with the small ensemble work that has been part of the course for the past two years. Percussionists please note instruments will be available, so there is no need haul a set of timps in the mini up to Yorkshire.

Ceilidh Band Practice (C) - Aidan Broadbridge
Everyone welcome, from whatever course whatever instrument, to practice for the folk dance band; and/or to try out some steps. It is ensemble playing with a difference, by ear or from music. Come to as many sessions as you can.

Chamber Choir (D) - Aidan Broadbridge, Accompanist: Judi Kelly
A course for more competent choral singers with reasonable sight reading skills.

Chamber Music (E) - Helen Dawson, Helen Purton & Graham Tear
The tutors will bring a range of music for wind, strings and mixed groupings. Participants are also encouraged to bring along any suitable music from home (please label carefully!).

Choir (F) - Aidan Broadbridge, Accompanist: Judi Kelly
A fun session for which all students are encouraged to enrol. A wide variety of music will be sung.

Composition (G) - Bill Tamblyn Top of Page
A new approach! It is hoped that composers will bring compositions that can be discussed and developed by fellow composers and by a group of ‘musicians in residence’. We will work towards a composers concert at the end of the week. (it would help enormously if composers who have more elaborate compositions to show and perform could send a score and/or a performance on disc at least a month in advance to Bill Tamblyn via the Music for People secretariat). We will also accommodate those who would like to learn about or share their enthusiasm for the Sibelius music programme. We will make a PC available for you to practice in your ‘free’ time during the week.

Dalcroze Eurhythmics - Helen Purton & Helen Dawson
This course involves physical movement, so participants should aim to wear comfortable clothing. Eurhythmics is best practised barefoot, though socks with rubber grips on the soles are a good alternative.

Dance Band (H) - Paul Medina
An ensemble playing strict-tempo arrangements by the great Jimmy Lally. Good sight-readers are required for this band, which will appear as entertainment on at least one occasion over the week with minimum rehearsal! Saxes, Brass, Rhythm section and strings all required. Interested parties should make themselves known to the tutor at the beginning of the week.

Folk (I) - Robin Garside Top of Page
The course is primarily intended to stimulate an interest in, to inform about and enable people to participate in, the folk music of the British Isles, although other cultures may be touched upon. The course is for musicians and singers of all ability and the primary objectives are to learn something about folk music, join in with group music-making activities, maybe write a song or a piece of music, but mainly to enjoy the course. While there is no need to be able to read music, an idea of the rudiments of harmony and music will be included in the course.

Orchestral and Band Percussion (J) - Tom Atherton assisted by Brendan J Rayner
It has been proven by science that being a percussionist is the most fun that anyone can have. This course introduces you to the wide and varied world of orchestral percussion, building on your existing music-reading skills. It will show you the few basic techniques that will enable you to play in an orchestral or band percussion section. You will be able to explore orchestral repertoire and develop existing skills. You will work towards playing with the wind-band and orchestra at the end of the week (previous students all enjoyed the amazing experience of working as a percussion team in ‘real-time’). New this year will be the opportunity for previous students to elect to work on orchestral extracts and ensemble music.
All equipment and instruments are provided and you will be very welcome to bring your own. Advice can be given in advance about purchasing mallets and instruments if you wish to do so.

Saxophone Choir (M) - Nicola Long
Come on you saxy saxes!! Don’t forget to bring any arrangements for more than four saxes with you!

Opera (P) - Virginia Rushton, Accompanist Daniel Browell
Students should already have been advised of their roles in this years opera WeDoDido! It is expected that you will be note and word perfect before the course begins. You will have received details about the music, costumes and props well in advance.

Percussion Ensemble (Q) - Tom Atherton assisted by Brendan J Rayner
I’m looking for the most inquisitive, daring and innovative music minds in Summer School to take part in this exciting group. The ensemble will be involved in composing a Percussion Event to be performed with the Opera ! If you love sounds, hitting things and asking ‘why not ?’, this will appeal to you. An ‘O’ level in carpentry, sticking things together or ‘borrowing’ may be an advantage ! Previous experience in manipulating large pieces of paper is a bonus.
You can bring instruments and noise making apparatus with you or source them when you get here; Summer School has a large percussion department. Orchestral, folk and ethnic instruments will live alongside more innovative instruments. Experienced percussionist or other ‘musicians’, beginners or anywhere in between will be able to contribute at a high level in this exciting project.
Group size will be limited so apply robustly. If you think that you would enjoy this, you’re probably right.

I wish I could Sing (K) - Virginia Rushton Top of Page
This course is for those people, including instrumentalists, who want to sing but need help to find their singing voice. It will also suit those who think that they have lost the voice that they once had. Sadly, lots of people lose opportunities to sing when they transfer to secondary school and never have the time or the opportunity to pick it up again. Here is your chance! This is a carefully designed and effective course to help you discover your voice and the joy of singing within a completely supportive atmosphere.

Solo Singing - First Steps (V) - Virginia Rushton
This course will include some group vocal exercises and solo songs. Please remember that you are asked to prepare three songs, which may be in any musical style and of any standard, which you are happy to sing in front of the whole group. If you would like some help in choosing your songs then please contact the tutor (Virginia Rushton Tel: 0208 858 9041.

String Orchestra (S) - Helen Dawson assisted by Helen Purton
The string orchestra will be working on a range of repertoire over the course of the week, including Corelli's Concerto Grosso opus 6 no. 8 and Alan Ridout's Sinfonia for Strings and Percussion.

Symphonic Wind Orchestra (T) - Graham Tear Top of Page
A large ensemble for wind, brass and percussion, playing a mixture of original works and arrangements. Percussionists please note instruments will be available, so there is no need haul a set of timps in the mini up to Yorkshire.

Symphony Orchestra (U) - Graham Tear assisted by Helen Purton,

Aims to join together the various instrumental courses. For those who are less experienced orchestral players, it will give a certain amount of cover and support. For those already playing in orchestras, it will give an opportunity to build on technique and work with a different conductor for a week. Percussionists please note instruments will be available, so there is no need haul a set of timps in the mini up to Yorkshire.

Technique for Brass Players: Session 3 - Dave Payn
Technique for brass will cover general aspects of brass technique in a structured manner. Students are invited to bring their own music for discussion.

Theory (W) - Bill Tamblyn
”Grade 5 theory without tears!” a new programme of learning designed to propel even the most cautious towards the ABRSM grade 5 theory. We will also accommodate those who would like to work towards Grade 8 theory and already have a good pass at grade 5. As usual we will set ‘homework’ each lesson and squeeze in extra tutorials if you need them.

World Music Singing Group (X) - Bill Tamblyn
Music from the New World this year we will be rehearsing songs from the Caribbean, and the American ‘deep south’ linked to music from the ‘slave states’ of West Africa. Bring your voice, your guitars, anything you want to shake, rattle or even roll and of course bring examples of vocal music you would like to share with us.

Wind Ensembles (Z) - Nicola Long
Music for wind choirs and the largest ensemble of woodwind and horns. Music will be selected from a wide variety of original compositions and arrangements
